Teach Your Children Well

Start 'em young

As parents, we all want to pass along to our children those life lessons that help build character, teach important morals and help shape them into fine, upstanding citizens.

Such is this week's Theme Thursday topic.  The specific question posed dealt with which one lesson, ideal or moral we'd most like to impress on them.

But there's so much the Hubby and I would like to impart, that I found it hard to narrow down to just one.  Here are some of the life lessons we plan to mold our young Silly Puddy-ans with.

Listen to your mother.

Always question authority.

Listen to your Uncle Mick.

You can't always get what you want...

But if you try sometimes, you just might find...

...you get what you need.

Always turn it up.

To eleven.

(Except on Sunday mornings or when Mom & Dad are sleeping.)

Don't get stuck on any one idea.

Be open minded when making decisions.

When the time comes...

...learn to hold your liquor.

Don't be an asshole.

Don't grow up to be like this Guy.

Give peas a chance.

Show a little.

  1. I'm pretty sure we would be great friends in real life. I suspected as much but then I saw Nigel and knew for sure. Love this post.

    1. I'm thinking that too. We could tear up that grocery store in a mad frenzy of complaint, rock and roll and coffee consumption. ;)

  2. I've quoted Uncle Mick to the boy on many occasions. He still hasn't quite grasped that lesson... One of my proudest parenting moments, though, was when he was 2.5 and randomly burst into the chorus of "Gimme Shelter" in a restaurant. Off-topic, I know, but I do not care because it was awesome.

    1. It IS awesome and definitely worth mentioning. And I love that it was in public. See? He's already on the fast track to greatness. Uncle Mick has so much to impart: Stubborn stains? Paint it black. Need the perfect gift: Send 'em Dead Flowers. It's an excellent conversation piece. Can't get no satisfaction? Keep trying. He's a font of wisdom, that Mick.

    1. That pic was taken a few years ago. His expressions have been a little more sly and mischievous these days! ;) But yeah, I think he was like "This thing is way bigger than me and it's heavy!"

  5. The most important is Don't be an asshole. Seems to be a trend there....

By the way, what is wrong with Guy?

    1. There does! Great minds, right?

Guy...well...I guess you didn't read my post yesterday. ;) If you're a fan, don't read it! lol I'm not a fan. I just think he's a cartoon character and well...I believe the French have a term for it? Douche bag.

  7. NICELY DONE! I particularly loved the Mick quote - words to live by.

I loved this so much (as I do with all of your posts).

But I would love to have Guy's job. I might not be as slovenly about it, though - ha! ;)

    1. Mick is as full of wisdom as he is with moves! Yes, it would be nice to have a gig like Guy's. I just wish FN would stop talking down to America. Alton Brown is smart and funny and people love him. Why do they feed us caricatures like this who say stupid things like "off the hook!" 50 times in one episode?

  8. I grew up listening to Uncle Mick's advice, too, and I really think it helped me become the person I am today.
It was always weird hearing it come from my dad's record player, but hey, you absorb what you absorb. My kids will also know the magic of Goat's Head Soup.

    1. That's cool Natalie. I grew up listening to Andy Williams and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. haha That's excellent that you're passing the torch.

  9. Bingo! All golden words here :-) Brilliant post. And I'm kind of doing the same thing with The Beans. Music is SOOOO important. It weaves together the fabric of our lives, and teaches such wisdom, as it's a universal language. I'm a HUGE fan of Dave Matthews, and often relate his lyrics to life lessons. Not the same as Mick...who is epic, but still important in my world.
